DIY Natural Hair- Rainy Day Hair Mask Idea

It rains so much here in Tampa. I don't complain about it too much though. I love days like these. I guess it’s because I love having a reason to stay home. And I don’t have to feel so guilty about having a laid back day.  Because it rains often, and on days like these I’ll probably stay in all day, why not whip up a natural hair mask?

A rainy day is the best day to relax and pamper yourself.
Ideally, I suggest making a hair mask that can be left on for a few hours so, a protein mask is out of the question.

You’ll need:

-A conditioning cap
-coconut oil
-Shea butter
- Lavender

hair mask

This mask can stay on for at least an hour, but i prefer to go longer than that. After rinsing,  apply your favorite leave-in conditioner. My favorite is this one by African Pride

DIY Natural Hair - Memories of My Very First Relaxer

When I was about seven & still living in the Bronx, I got my first relaxer. It wasn't by choice, and my mom didn't know about it.
My aunt took me to a Dominican salon off of Sheridan Ave (just down the block from our apartment building )and a few hours later, I was a new girl.
I don’t remember the process, how it felt or if I cried, but being that I was and still am tender headed I’m positive I did. I only remember how I felt after the fact.
I wish you could've seen my confidence that day. I couldn't stop looking at myself in the mirror. I wanted the wind to blow through my strands as ran down the block just because. There was no need to run , but I ran because i wanted my hair to look like Winnie’s  from the Wonder Years J.  I felt like a Disney princess. Needless to say, my mom was upset. I didn't get another relaxer until I was about 14 . It wasn't until the  10th grade that I started embracing my natural hair.  Since then, I have been loving what God has blessed me with and I wouldn't have it any other way. Now, let’s focus on the good stuff ….

DIY Natural Hair - Coconut Oil Review Part 1

  Beauties,
On Monday I mentioned that I was going to the store to pick up a jar of coconut oil. I stayed true to my word and found a brand  that is  pretty inexpensive , but most importantly one that was unrefined and organic. I paid a little less than $7 for a 12 oz. container ( this should last me several months).
When we think of refined we think of something that’s processed,  bleached , and deodorized, which results in the loss of important nutrients. Since I’m seeking out the purist of products for my skin and hair I decided to go with the  Coconut Oil 100% Organic Extra Virgin.
I should mention : I am not a cosmetologist, but like most people I research and have gained a wealth of knowledge by doing so. For a more in-depth list of benefits of coconut oil visit OrganicFacts.com .

What are some of the benefits of using Coconut oil on your hair?
Coconut oil penetrates the hair providing moisture from the inside out. While most oils just sit on your hair giving off a healthy appearance, coconut oil does not. I noticed this when i used it for the first time on Monday. Coconut oil is a hair conditioning, anti-dandruff, hair toning, damage repairing hair care must have.
How did you use the oil ?
I used the oil to help untangle my hair ( with a wide tooth comb, finger de-tangling was out of the question last night) . I parted my hair into about 6 sections and started to work the oil into my hair as thoroughly as possible. When I was completely finished, I added a bit more of oil to my crown area (which tends to be the driest area on my head.) as well as my ends. I then massaged my scalp and put on a conditioning cap for a few minutes.
How much oil did you use?
I used roughly a teaspoon per section.
What did I  like and or dislike about the oil?
I've only used it once and I don’t have anything bad to say about it.  I purchased it in solid form but as you start to work it through your hands it starts to melt right away. It wasn’t heavy at all so my hair was de-tangled I was able to work my fingers through my hair very easily. Great slip! I also liked that the oil was very easy to wash out. When I was finished with my washing process I wrapped my hair in a t-shirt, and without following up with any products my curls were already nicely defined. Like I mentioned before, I’ve only used it once, but I can that my hair loves coconut oil!
How often will you be treating your hair with Coconut oil?
I plan to use the oil for finger de-tangling or comb de-tangling once a week before washing  my hair.

I will soon have a video showing you how I de-tangle my hair before co-washing!

DIY Natural Hair : A Bit of Styling Inspiration

Happy Wednesday everyone,
For the longest time i have been wanting my hair braided in some way or another.
I like to have my hair up and away from my face as much as possible (especially during the summer), but I’m starting to get bored with the same styles. I’m looking for styles suitable for my thick curly head and that can be easily incorporated into my repetitive high bun, side part bun, & twisted mid bun ( not sure if that’s the name for it).
Here’s what I would love for you to do!
Share your favorite braided styles with me. You can share a link in the comment section, or tweet me @mykarenmaria with your pics.

I need all of the help I can get, friends.
From the heart,
-Karen M

DIY Natural Hair - The Pretty Girl Workout (reversing my eating habits)

Lately, I've been really watching the foods and drinks I allow myself to consume. I love candy, cakes, pies, custards, juices from concentrate, sodas, and the list goes on. I know I’m not the only one out there who eats these simple sugar filled, delicious but bad, no nutrition offering snacks and drinks. Well then, why don’t you embark on this journey with me? Maybe you want to start going to school feeling different about yourself, you want to feel more energized, or maybe you want to improve the health of your skin( yes diet plays a huge role, TRUST ME). The ultimate goal for us will be a healthier lifestyle, PERIOD.
I am proud to announce that I have been drinking 6-8 cups of water consistently and I've limited my sugar intake by about  80% for sure. But I have to admit ladies, I stopped by Amscot to pay my electrical bill and I could not resist the tootsie rolls. It’s not like they ask you if you want any.. they assume you do, then hand you a handful as if they earn commission on how many of those yummy treats they can give out. Well surely I didn't say ‘’ no thank you’’; I figured it was a little gift to myself for a job well done. As you can see it’s not easy but I’m sure I’ll be more successful if I had you on my team. DIY Natural Hair - An EASY Protein Hair Mask Recipe

Protein Hair Mask Recipe.
Pic from:

Hey there ladies,
Do you have dry brittle hair? Two different textures? Is the hair on the crown of your head weaker and more prone to damage?
We can’t reverse the damage but we can begin to repair and protect the rest of the hair.
I have started to really nurture my hair a little more. Before I got married my mom was the one on me about making sure I take care of my hair a little better and on a consistent basis.
Today I want to share with you a mask that is sure to get your natural hair on track. My mother shared this with me.

Let’s begin with a protein mask. These are ingredients you can find at home or in your pantry.

You’ll need :
1 egg ( protein)
Mayonnaise (Protein)
Olive oil  (moisturizes, promotes hair growth, aids in repairing hair)( use Plenty of this)
Put on a shower cap and leave in for as long as you wish. At least 30 min.

That simple.
Now, if you are protein sensitive than use either the egg or the mayo as they both are sources of protein.
It’s important to know whether you are protein sensitive because even though our hair needs protein, Protein can have a drying effect on certain peoples hair especially if your  hair care products contain protein and you don’t even know it. (Check your products for any form of protein.)
Remember : Too much protein is bad and not enough is also bad.
Apply this mask to damp hair for easier application. This mask should only be done once every 6-8 weeks depending on your sensitivity.  I tried this mask last week and I love it!
Next time I’ll have homemade conditioners good for every week.

DIY Natural Hair - 5 Steps To Keeping Hair Looking RIGHT While Working out!

The Pretty Gurl Workout
You are welcome.

How many times have we heard these excuses?
( My list of 5 excuses I've used and have heard women of color use to avoid the gym.)
5.‘’I’m too tired’’
4.’’ I just ate, wouldn't want to get a cramp.’’
3. ‘’I have a big test coming up, so I need to prioritize.’’
2. Who me?? I’m in great shape(fingers crossed…LIES!!)
And the number 1 excuse for not going to the gym:
1.‘’I just got my hair done.’’
I can’t really give any tips for numbers 5-2 because that’s just us being lazy, Honestly, it’s time to..
JUST DO IT.
I can however share some tips on how to keep your hair looking good even after a much needed workout.
My hair is naturally big ,curly, and pretty long but occasionally( a few times a year) I’ll treat myself to a nice blowout. The whole process can easily take 3 or 4 hours. Needless to say, I've cleared out many Saturday mornings for my locks. I to avoided going to the gym when my hair is done and even being outside for too long wasn't an option. Luckily, I found a few simple solutions to this very valid excuse. Have any other tips for hair at the gym?? Share them below!
       1. Use a dry shampoo before and after working out to absorb any excess oil and sweat already on your scalp. I wouldn't get too comfortable using this more often than a cleansing conditioner( My choice), or a shampoo. It is however, perfect for any outdoors activity where your scalp would be prone to produce extra oil , sweat,  and irritation.
2.      2. Tightly wrap your head in a cotton scarf(Cotton absorbs moisture very well!). The tighter the scarf is the better, that way the sweat you excrete quickly gets absorbed into the scarf giving your hair less of a chance of coiling up.
3. * To piggy back on # 2 . Avoid styling your hair in bun or having your hair out when covered by the cotton scarf/head wrap. Think about it, If your scalp happens to sweat and your hair is styled in a bun,  your hair strands will start to be moistened and will eventually frizz. Instead style your hair in a tight pony tail using a metal free hair piece to avoid breakage.
4. If you don’t plan to work out often but would still want the option to work out and keep your hair looking fresh: Leave the rigorous or high intensity  workouts for the days your letting your hair breathe before styling again, for when you’re almost ready to take your hair out or for when you’re ready to wash it or relax it and you’re not a fan of how it looks anyway. During that time I would focus on cardio exercises.

5. Lastly, enjoy having natural hair. Embrace those natural coils and curls you were blessed with and work with what you've got. You’ll save money and valuable time, and I know we’d all like that. One of the best benefits? You won’t have to worry about how your hair will react after your workout.

What tips would you like to share?
